In November of 2013, the life of 19-year-old Michelle L. Russell was tragically cut short in a series of harrowing events that unfolded across Kansas City. The young woman, who had been accepted into the criminal justice program at Penn Valley College and worked as a hostess, was remembered by friends and family for her kind heart and her dream of helping others.
The tragic chain of events began on the night of Thursday, November 21, 2013, when police were called to a Motel 6 on
Northwest Prairie View Road in response to a reported shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered a crime scene but no victim. A guest at the motel later told police they heard a gunshot and saw a woman with a head wound on the sidewalk before two men drove away with her.
Later that evening, a vehicle carrying a shooting victim matching Russell's description arrived at North Kansas City Hospital. However, before she could be admitted for treatment, the vehicle sped away. Hours later, in the early morning of November 22, the car was found abandoned near Centerpoint Medical Center in Independence. Inside, authorities made the grim discovery of Michelle Russell's body.
The investigation quickly led police to identify a person of interest, 26-year-old Joel Bravard. Bravard was already wanted on a Platte County warrant for failure to appear in a stolen property case. When officers attempted to question him at a residence on North Lawndale Avenue, they were met with gunfire, and one officer was shot in the leg. A standoff ensued, which ended with officers finding Bravard inside with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital where he later died. Authorities later confirmed that Bravard's death was the result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. While he was sought for questioning in connection with Russell's death, no arrests were officially made in her murder. The case left a grieving family and community to mourn the senseless loss of a young life.
