On the morning of February 20, 2014, a violent tragedy unfolded in the parking lot of the Raytown Schools Education and Conference Center in Raytown, Missouri. The assailant was identified as 43-year-old Falonzo Davis, the longtime former partner of Marla Lee. According to reports, Lee had ended her relationship with Davis just three days prior to the shooting. Driven by jealousy after discovering that Jones was driving his son to school, Davis had retrieved a. 45-caliber handgun from a pawn shop earlier that morning and waited in the parking lot for nearly twenty minutes. When Jones arrived, Davis sprinted across the lot and fired multiple shots into the vehicle. Witnesses and surveillance footage later revealed that after the initial volley of gunfire, Davis walked away to confront Lee and his son before returning to the car to fire a final shot at Jones, an act prosecutors later described as an execution.
