On a summer afternoon in Kansas City, Missouri, a transaction that began with the intention of a sale quickly spiraled into violence, leaving two young men dead. The incident unfolded on August 7, 2022, when 18-year-old Xaivon McKinzey, a male, accompanied by his friend, 18-year-old Jabari Ellis, met with a man at a Phillips 66 gas station located at 8111 E. 87th Street in Raytown.
The purpose of the meeting was the sale of a firearm.
The situation took a grim turn after the firearm was exchanged for $450. What was supposed to be a straightforward sale escalated into an attempted robbery. Following the exchange, Ellis allegedly brandished a weapon and pointed it at the buyer. In response, the buyer, who was also armed, drew his own firearm and opened fire. Both McKinzey and Ellis were struck by the gunfire. McKinzey was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ellis was transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Shortly after the shooting, the man who fired the fatal shots turned himself into the Kansas City police. During his interview with detectives, he claimed that he acted in self-defense, stating that he was being held at gunpoint at the time of the shooting. After an investigation into the incident, which included a review of surveillance footage that reportedly captured the attempted robbery, the shooter was not charged with a crime.
While the shooter was not charged, an accomplice of McKinzey and Ellis, 18-year-old Darius Williams, was arrested and faced legal consequences. Williams was charged with armed criminal action and attempted robbery for his role in the events that led to the deaths of Xaivon McKinzey and Jabari Ellis. He was subsequently held in the Jackson County jail on a $50,000 bond. The final outcome of the legal proceedings against Williams is not publicly documented.
