Brooks was reportedly one of only three Black individuals at the gathering of about 100 people. At some point during the night, his friends departed, leaving him behind without a ride home after an apparent misunderstanding. That was the last time he was seen alive.
When he failed to return home the following day, his family grew worried and reported him missing, sparking a search by the Linn County Sheriff's Department.
For nearly a month, official searches by law enforcement yielded no clues to his whereabouts. Frustrated by the lack of progress, Brooks' family and friends organized their own search party on May 1, 2004. In less than an hour, they made a heartbreaking discovery: Brooks' body was found in a creek, partially resting on a pile of brush near the very farmhouse where he had vanished. An initial autopsy was performed, but the coroner was unable to determine a cause of death, and the investigation eventually went cold without any arrests being made.
Years of uncertainty for the Brooks family finally saw a glimmer of hope in 2019 when the U.S. Department of Justice and the FBI reopened the investigation into his death. The case gained further national attention after being featured on a television documentary series. In a significant development, federal authorities exhumed Brooks' body in July 2020 for a new examination. In April 2021, the FBI announced a crucial finding from a new autopsy conducted by armed forces medical examiners: Alonzo Brooks' death was a homicide. The new report identified injuries inconsistent with normal decomposition.
The focus of the renewed investigation has centered on the possibility that Brooks was the victim of a racially motivated crime. The FBI is offering a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for his death. Despite these developments and the official ruling of homicide, no suspects have been publicly named, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case. The circumstances of what happened at the party and in the moments leading to his death remain under investigation, leaving his family and community still searching for justice.
