In the early morning hours of Monday, June 2, 2014, Angella Heard, a 48-year-old Black / African American female, was brutally shot in the head near her home at 15th Street and Missouri Avenue in East St. Louis, Illinois. Investigators believe that shortly before the attack, she had left a nearby convenience store. The motive for the shooting was suspected by her family to have been a robbery, while police reports also indicated the shooting may have occurred after an argument with an unknown individual.
For several days, Angella fought for her life in a local hospital, but she ultimately succumbed to her injuries on Friday, June 6, 2014. Her death left her family, including her twelve older siblings, devastated. Remembered as an aspiring artist with a giving nature, those who knew her described her as a person who loved life and forgave easily. In the wake of her death, dozens of residents gathered for a vigil held in her honor at Lincoln Park to pay tribute to the woman they had lost to a senseless act of violence.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials stated that they had not identified any person of interest and had not confirmed a motive for the crime. They appealed to the public for any information that might lead to an arrest. Despite the initial investigation and pleas for information, there have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests, suspects, or charges in connection with the murder of Angella Heard.
