In the quiet, rural community of Tyrone, Missouri, the night of February 26, 2015, was shattered by a tragic and unforeseen wave of violence that claimed the life of 44-year-old Valirea Carline Love Shriver, along with her husband and father-in-law. The devastating events unfolded as a local man, 36-year-old Joseph Jesse Aldridge, embarked on a shooting spree that left a total of seven people dead before he ultimately took his own life.
The rampage is believed to have been triggered when
Aldridge discovered his 74-year-old mother, Alice L. Aldridge, deceased in her home from what appeared to be natural causes. In the hours that followed, Aldridge, armed with a. 45-caliber handgun, moved through the small town, targeting relatives and neighbors in a series of brutal attacks at four different homes.
Valirea Shriver, her husband Carey Dean Shriver, 46, and his father, Darrell Dean Shriver, 68, were among the victims of Aldridge's violent outburst. A relative, John Shriver, discovered the bodies of Carey and Valirea in the bedroom of their home after receiving a frantic call from Darrell's wife, Martha, who had been shot and wounded but survived. The couple's 13-year-old son was found unharmed in his bedroom on the opposite side of the house, having slept through the horrific events.
The string of killings spread terror throughout the tight-knit community as law enforcement from Texas County and the Missouri Highway Patrol responded to the escalating situation. The first alert to authorities came from a young girl who fled her home after hearing gunshots and ran to a neighbor's house to call for help. Responding deputies discovered her parents, Garold Dee Aldridge, 52, and Julie Ann Aldridge, 47, deceased inside. The other victims were identified as Harold Wayne Aldridge, 50, and his wife, Janell Arlisa Aldridge, 48. The four Aldridge victims were cousins of the shooter.
The manhunt for Joseph Aldridge ended in the early morning hours of February 27, when he was found dead in his pickup truck in neighboring Shannon County from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators found no signs of forced entry at any of the crime scenes, suggesting the victims likely knew their attacker. The motive appeared to be a sudden and violent reaction to his mother's death, a tragic turn of events that left a small Missouri town forever scarred by the loss of beloved community members, including Valirea Shriver.
