In the early evening of a Thursday in St. Louis, a disagreement between two men escalated into a fatal encounter on a front porch in the 5000 block of Queens. On that day, April 2, 2015, 42-year-old Clifford Williams was shot multiple times in his abdomen, bicep, and thigh. The man police identified as the shooter was 29-year-old Paul Edward Clayton.
According to authorities, Clayton had gone to Williams' home following their dispute and opened fire.
Inside the house at the time of the shooting was Williams' uncle. Hearing the gunshots, the uncle retrieved a firearm and shot Clayton in the back as Clayton was attempting to flee the scene. Both Williams and Clayton were transported to a local hospital for their injuries.
Despite medical efforts, Clifford Williams succumbed to his wounds and died at the hospital. Clayton, who was listed in serious but stable condition, survived his injuries. Following the incident, the St. Louis police arrested Paul Edward Clayton. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the death of Clifford Williams.
