On May 31, 2015, a 28-year-old male named Daniel Day disappeared from his residence in Washington, Missouri, sparking a search that would last for nearly a year. He was last seen around 2:00 a.m. at his apartment located on the 1000 block of Marilyn Court. When his girlfriend returned home from work at approximately 7:00 a.m. later that morning, she discovered that he was gone. Notably, Day had left behind all of his personal belongings, including his keys, wallet, and cellphone.
The only item missing from the apartment was his handgun, a detail that became central to the subsequent missing person investigation.
For months, local authorities and the community sought answers regarding his whereabouts. The case remained unresolved until March 14, 2016, when a significant development occurred. A girl walking in a wooded area behind a residence near East Rose Lane in Washington, Missouri, discovered skeletal remains. Alongside the remains, she found a handgun. Police responded to the scene to collect the evidence and launched an immediate inquiry to determine the identity of the deceased.
Investigators determined that the clothing found at the scene was consistent with what Day was wearing when he vanished, and the handgun recovered next to the remains was identified as the weapon missing from his apartment. The remains were sent to the St. Louis County Medical Examiner’s Office, where they were positively identified as Daniel Day. Following the discovery and examination of the evidence, the Washington Police Department stated that they did not suspect foul play in his death. Consequently, there were no arrests, suspects, or charges filed in connection with the case.
