On December 5, 2018, a tragic incident occurred in Washington, Missouri, resulting in the death of 86-year-old Harold Edward Humphrey. The male victim was at his residence when a confrontation took place during the morning hours. Law enforcement officers were dispatched to the home after receiving a 911 call reporting a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Humphrey suffering from a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite the presence of his wife in the home at the time of the violence, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation quickly identified a suspect, Humphrey's 25-year-old grandson, Jeremiah Bair, who had placed the emergency call himself and waited for deputies to arrive. According to reports, the altercation stemmed from a demand Bair made for an apology from his grandfather. Humphrey, who suffered from hearing difficulties, apparently did not provide the apology Bair sought. Following this refusal, Bair retrieved a firearm and shot his grandfather while he was seated at his breakfast table.
Bair was taken into custody and initially charged with second-degree murder and armed criminal action, though the charges were later upgraded. He remained in the Franklin County Jail as the legal process unfolded. In May 2023, a jury found Bair guilty of first-degree murder and armed criminal action. Subsequently, in July 2023, he received a sentence of life in prison for the fatal shooting of his grandfather.
