On May 14, 2016, a tragic domestic incident unfolded in Ironton, Missouri, resulting in the death of Tammy Jones. Authorities were called to an apartment where they discovered the lifeless body of the 30-year-old White female, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. At the scene, law enforcement also found her husband, Corey Jones, suffering from a gunshot injury in what investigators quickly determined was an attempted murder-suicide.
While Tammy was pronounced dead at the scene, Corey was transported to a St. Louis hospital where medical personnel successfully treated his wounds, allowing him to survive the self-inflicted trauma.
The investigation revealed that the violence occurred while children were present in the home. Court records indicated that Corey Jones knowingly caused the death of his wife after an argument, retrieving a firearm from upstairs before returning to shoot her. The couple’s 12-year-old daughter and a one-year-old infant were in close proximity to the shooting, leading to additional charges against him for endangering the welfare of a child. Following his recovery, Corey Jones was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and child endangerment.
In September 2017, rather than facing a trial that could have resulted in the death penalty, Corey Jones entered a guilty plea to the charge of first-degree murder. During the hearing, he admitted to the court that he had killed his wife following their dispute. Consequently, he was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole. Jones later attempted to challenge his conviction through a post-conviction relief motion, but his appeal was denied by the Missouri Court of Appeals in November 2021, affirming the life sentence for the crime.
