In the spring of 2016, a dispute between neighbors in Carthage, Missouri, escalated to a fatal conclusion, ending the life of 38-year-old Jeremy Neeper. On the evening of May 16, 2016, an argument erupted between Neeper and his next-door neighbor, which resulted in Neeper being fatally shot.
The man responsible for the shooting was identified as 62-year-old Ricky Marchbanks. Following the incident, which occurred on the east side of Carthage, Marchbanks was taken into custody.
He claimed that he had acted in self-defense during the altercation with Neeper.
Despite his claims of self-defense, Ricky Marchbanks was charged with first-degree murder. In January 2020, the case went to trial. A jury ultimately rejected Marchbanks' self-defense argument and found him guilty of the charge. As a result of the conviction, he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
