On July 5, 2016, a violent tragedy unfolded in the Walnut Park West neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of Reginald Wilkes, known to friends and family by his nickname 'Cowboy.' The 59-year-old Black male was inside a residence on the 5500 block of Era Avenue when the incident occurred during the early morning hours. Police were called to the home around 3:40 a.m., where they discovered a harrowing scene involving multiple fatalities.
Inside the residence, officers found Wilkes deceased alongside his partner, 60-year-old Eunice Cain.
The investigation determined that the perpetrator of the violence was Cain's son, 44-year-old Kenneth Murray. Detectives established that Murray had opened fire on both his mother and his stepfather, Wilkes, fatally wounding them both inside the home. Following the double homicide, Murray turned the weapon on himself, committing suicide at the scene. Authorities recovered two firearms from the location, and medical personnel pronounced all three individuals dead shortly after their arrival.
Because the suspect took his own life immediately following the shootings, there were no arrests made or trials held in connection with the deaths. Police records indicated that Murray had a prior criminal history, which included convictions for attempted robbery and armed criminal action, as well as past charges related to trespassing and assault. The case was classified as a murder-suicide, closing the investigation into the sudden loss of life that shook the local community.
