In the midst of mourning, a family dispute outside a St. Louis funeral home escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 39-year-old George Calmese Jr. On August 8, 2016, Calmese was attending his cousin's funeral when a disagreement over the custody of the deceased's young daughter erupted in the parking lot of the Reliable Funeral Home. Calmese intervened in an attempt to mediate the situation.
The heated argument quickly turned violent, and gunshots rang out.
In the ensuing chaos, Calmese was fatally wounded, and his own teenage son sustained a non-life-threatening injury. The altercation, which began as a verbal dispute, had ended in a fatal shooting, leaving a family to grapple with another sudden loss.
Following the incident, two men, 32-year-old Van Marcus Batts and 26-year-old Torrian Wallace, were identified as suspects. They were subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with the shooting death of George Calmese Jr. The swift arrests brought a momentary sense of resolution to a community shaken by the violence that had unfolded at a place of mourning.
However, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn. In November 2016, a grand jury declined to indict Batts and Wallace on the charges brought against them. The decision came after witnesses testified that Calmese had allegedly fired a weapon first during the altercation. Consequently, the charges against both men were dropped, and they were released from custody.
