In the winter of 2016, a young man's life was tragically cut short in a St. Louis alley, setting off a chain of events that would lead to another death and a complex legal battle. Eighteen-year-old Dwayne Clanton, a male, was with his friend, 16-year-old James Scales, on December 26th when they were confronted by an acquaintance from school. In a sudden act of violence, the schoolmate, identified as Keith Graham, pulled out a gun and shot Dwayne in the head, killing him.
James Scales,
having witnessed the horrific event, cooperated with police and identified Graham as the shooter. This act of civic duty, however, placed him in grave danger. Graham was subsequently arrested and charged with first-degree murder for Dwayne's death. While incarcerated, and determined to prevent James from testifying, Graham allegedly orchestrated a plot to have him permanently silenced. He reportedly contacted his brothers, William Pearson Jr. and Terez Cook Jr., along with a friend, Devion X Gordon, offering them money to kill the teenage witness.
The conspiracy to eliminate the key witness in Dwayne Clanton's murder came to a devastating conclusion on the morning of September 5, 2017. As James Scales waited for his school bus, he was ambushed and fatally shot. The investigation into his murder led authorities back to Keith Graham and his associates. In March 2018, Graham, Pearson, Cook, and Gordon were all charged in connection with James's death.
The ensuing legal proceedings brought a series of complex and, for some, unsatisfying conclusions. In a trial that took place years later, a jury acquitted Devion X Gordon, Terez Cook Jr., and William Malik Pearson Jr. of the murder of James Scales. Keith Graham was also acquitted of the first-degree murder charges for both Dwayne Clanton and James Scales. However, he was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and witness tampering in relation to James's death and was sentenced to a term of 15 years in prison. The tragic deaths of two young men left a lasting scar on the community, with the legal outcomes highlighting the intricate and often challenging path to securing convictions in violent crimes.
