On the afternoon of May 25, 2017, 19-year-old Christopher Hutson Jr. was driving his gold Chevy Impala through Kansas City, Missouri, accompanied by his girlfriend who was seven months pregnant. The couple was returning from a sonogram appointment and attempting to navigate toward her home when they became disoriented in rush-hour traffic near Interstate 435.
As Hutson drove slowly while trying to get his bearings on Holmes Road near 104th Street, he encountered a blue sedan driven by 45-year-old John Clarence Young Jr.
The situation escalated when Young pulled alongside Hutson’s vehicle and shouted an obscenity, telling the teenager to learn how to drive before speeding through an intersection. Hutson followed the sedan to the next stoplight, reportedly intending to exchange words with the other driver. When the vehicles aligned again, Young fired a single gunshot through the open passenger window of Hutson's car. The bullet grazed the pregnant passenger and struck Hutson in the head. He was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day, May 26, 2017. His girlfriend and their unborn child survived the attack.
In the days following the shooting, police received a tip from a witness who recognized Young and his vehicle from surveillance images released to the media. The tipster reported that Young was known for aggressive driving and carrying a firearm. When authorities moved to arrest him, they discovered that in the time between the murder and his capture, Young had continued his daily routine, including going to work, taking a fishing trip to Branson, and attending a Kansas City Royals game. He had also instructed his wife to remove the murder weapon and other incriminating items from their home.
John Clarence Young Jr. was charged in Jackson County with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and other related offenses. During the trial, the defense argued self-defense, but the jury ultimately convicted him of the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, as well as two counts of armed criminal action, unlawful use of a weapon, second-degree assault, and tampering with physical evidence. In April 2018, a judge sentenced Young to a total of 24 years in prison for his role in the road rage killing. Christopher Hutson Jr., a registered organ donor, was credited with saving multiple lives through his death.
