The investigation into Rebecca’s death began when a man, who had also been shot, managed to escape the farmhouse and flag down a passing motorist for help. He directed authorities to the scene where they found Rebecca's body. The subsequent investigation quickly led to the arrest of three individuals: Danielle L. Bell, then 19, Raphael R. Corrioso, 23, and Kevin Fenwick, 28. All three were charged with second-degree murder, assault, and two counts of armed criminal action.
According to the surviving victim's account, the violent episode stemmed from a confrontation over a plan to rob Bell. Rebecca and the male victim were allegedly forced into a vehicle and taken to the desolate farmhouse. There, they were ordered to undress before the shooting began.
