Ralph Edward Cross, a 55-year-old African American male from Wilson City, Missouri, was found deceased inside his home on Tuesday, August 1, 2017. Authorities discovered his body with a fatal gunshot wound to the back. The initial investigation suggested that the motive for the crime was robbery, as investigators found the interior of his residence ransacked with couch cushions overturned and the victim’s pants pockets turned inside out. Ralph Cross was known in his community as a kind and generous individual, a reputation that tragically played a role in the events leading to his death.
On July 31, 2017, the day prior to the discovery of his body, Cross encountered four women who were stranded with a flat tire. The women, later identified as Brittany Curry, Ponesha Taylor, Johniesha Simmons, and Lauteshia Dotson, were reportedly traveling through the area from Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. Acting as a Good Samaritan, Cross not only purchased a new tire for their vehicle but also invited the group back to his home to stay while the repairs were being made. Witnesses reported seeing Cross with the women that evening and noted that he had invited them into his residence.
Concerns were raised when a neighbor observed the women hurriedly leaving the house in a white vehicle early the next morning, following a loud noise suspected to be a gunshot. One witness reported hearing one of the women make a comment about Cross 'tripping' as they fled the scene. Surveillance footage from local businesses later helped law enforcement identify the suspects, and pressure from family and friends led the four women to turn themselves in to the Mississippi County Sheriff's Office on August 3, 2017. All four suspects were subsequently charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful use of a weapon.
During the investigation, statements from the suspects revealed that Brittany Curry was the individual who pulled the trigger. Two of the women, Johniesha Simmons and Lauteshia Dotson, told investigators that Curry shot Cross in the back while Ponesha Taylor witnessed the act. In October 2019, Brittany Curry entered a guilty plea to a reduced charge of second-degree murder. She was sentenced to 16 years in the Missouri Department of Corrections for her role in the killing. The case highlighted the tragic outcome of a charitable act, leaving the community of Wilson City to mourn the loss of a neighbor who died while trying to help strangers in need.
