On August 13, 2017, the life of 24-year-old Cierra Jackson was tragically cut short in her home in St. Louis, Missouri. The African-American woman was discovered late that Sunday night inside her residence on the 1700 block of O'Fallon Street. She had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the torso and was pronounced dead at the scene by responding authorities.
The incident occurred amidst a violent weekend in the city, but investigators quickly identified the specific circumstances surrounding her death as being rooted in a domestic conflict rather than random violence.
Police focused their investigation on Victor Whittier, Jackson's 24-year-old ex-boyfriend, who had been the subject of her safety concerns prior to the shooting. Jackson had previously filed for a restraining order against Whittier and had reported receiving threatening text messages from him. Authorities determined that the shooter had fired multiple rounds through the window of Jackson's bedroom from the outside. Her younger brother, who was eleven years old at the time and in another room playing video games, told investigators he heard Whittier's voice yelling an obscenity immediately before the gunshots rang out.
Whittier was arrested on August 15, 2017, two days after the homicide, and was held without bail. He was charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
