On November 11, 2017, a violent incident in Springfield, Missouri, claimed the life of twenty-three-year-old Danny Lee Dayton. Danny, a White male who was a Navy veteran and employee at a local Steak 'n Shake, was preparing to leave for work from his residence on East Verona Street around 5:00 p.m. As he and a witness were getting ready to depart, the situation abruptly turned fatal when his half-brother, Brandon M. Johnson, opened fire.
Reports from the scene indicated that Johnson shot Dayton multiple times, ultimately standing over him and continuing to fire even after the victim had fallen.
Following the shooting, Johnson reportedly forced the witness to drive him away from the scene, allegedly assaulting them during the escape. Law enforcement officers were able to apprehend Johnson shortly after the homicide. During the subsequent interrogation, Johnson confessed to the killing, simply stating, 'I just did it,' though he offered no clear motive or further explanation for his actions at the time. He was initially held in the Greene County Jail on a $500,000 bond.
The legal proceedings concluded two years later in December 2019. Brandon M. Johnson entered a guilty plea as part of an agreement with prosecutors. He was convicted of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. The court sentenced him to twenty-five years in prison for the murder charge and five years for the armed criminal action charge, with the judge ordering the terms to be served concurrently.
