On December 31, 2017, the community of Florissant, Missouri, was shaken by a tragic incident involving 22-year-old Eric Clark, a Black male, whose life was cut short during a New Year's Eve gathering. The events unfolded around 11:25 a.m. in the 11300 block of Bristol Rock Road, where Clark was spending time with an acquaintance inside a parked vehicle outside his home.
The holiday atmosphere turned somber when a firearm discharge shattered the quiet of the neighborhood, drawing local law enforcement to the scene to investigate what was initially reported as a shooting.
Upon arrival, officers discovered Clark inside the vehicle suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. despite the immediate response, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The investigation revealed that Clark had been sitting in the car with 23-year-old Devin Booker. According to police reports, the two men were comparing firearms when the situation turned deadly. Booker was reportedly handling a loaded. 45-caliber handgun in the rear passenger seat and, while racking the slide back and forth, he accidentally pulled the trigger. The weapon fired a single round, striking Clark and causing the fatal injury.
Devin Booker remained at the scene and admitted to firing the weapon, describing the event to authorities as an accident resulting from mishandling the gun. Following the investigation, police determined that while the shooting was not intentional, it was the result of reckless behavior. Booker was subsequently taken into custody and charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter. He was held on a $25,000 bond as the legal proceedings commenced, marking a grim start to the new year for the families involved.
