Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officials discovered the body of a White male victim who had sustained fatal injuries consistent with a shooting.
The situation was immediately treated as a homicide, with detectives securing the area to determine the sequence of events that led to the violence.
The victim was identified as 34-year-old Derek Ray Harrelson, a resident of Camdenton who had previously lived in Eldon, Missouri. Harrelson, known to his friends and family as a loving father, had worked in various capacities, including as a farmhand and more recently as a waiter at a local restaurant. He was remembered for his fondness for horses, drawing, and listening to Christian music. At the time of his death, he left behind children and a grieving family who later expressed their loss through memorial tributes, recalling him as a man who deeply cherished his loved ones.
Investigation into the night's events revealed that an altercation had occurred prior to the shooting. Authorities determined that Harrelson had been involved in an argument with 47-year-old Christine Jolene Zahn, who had returned to the residence after spending time at a bar. The verbal dispute escalated physically, culminating in Zahn discharging a firearm and striking Harrelson. She was subsequently taken into custody by the Camden County Sheriff's Office and held at the Camden County Adult Detention Center.
Christine Zahn initially faced charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action, with her bond set at $500,000 cash-only. As the legal process moved forward, prosecutors reviewed the evidence and the severity of the circumstances, leading the Missouri State Attorney General's Office to upgrade the charges against her to first-degree murder.
