Nicholas Heath Hudlow, a 39-year-old White male resident of Caulfield, Missouri, saw his life tragically cut short during the early morning hours of February 9, 2019. On that Saturday, emergency responders received a distress call regarding a shooting at a residence located on County Road 6790 near E Highway in Moody, Missouri. Upon arrival, authorities discovered Hudlow inside the home suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was urgently transported to Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains for treatment, but despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that night at approximately 11:03 p.m.
The investigation led by the Howell County Sheriff’s Office began immediately at the scene. Law enforcement officials noted that the owner of the residence, Michael R. Chezem, had placed a 911 call reporting the incident. During the call, Chezem allegedly admitted to dispatchers that he had fatally shot Hudlow but initially refused to provide his identity. When deputies arrived, Chezem was present at the scene but reportedly offered limited information, stating only that 'things got out of hand' and declining to provide a detailed motive without legal counsel. Investigators secured a. 22-caliber rifle at the property, which matched the description of the weapon used in the shooting.
Following the initial inquiry, 49-year-old Michael Chezem was taken into custody. Prosecutors charged him with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in connection with Hudlow's death. Authorities noted that while the two men were described as friends, the specific circumstances escalating to the violence remained unclear, with Chezem not claiming self-defense in his initial interactions with law enforcement. He was subsequently held on a $150,000 bond.
As the legal proceedings advanced, the case encountered procedural shifts. A judge granted a request for a change of venue, moving the trial from Howell County to Douglas County to ensure a fair adjudication process. Throughout early 2020, the court schedule saw multiple delays, pushing the trial dates back as the judicial system worked to address the serious charges brought against Chezem for the loss of Nicholas Hudlow.
