On the early morning of June 23, 2024, a chaotic sequence of events unfolded in the heart of downtown St. Louis, Missouri, leading to the untimely death of Larry Lewis III. The 26-year-old Black male from Florissant was amongst a crowd gathering near 10th and Market streets, an area adjacent to the Citygarden sculpture park. What began as a social atmosphere turned volatile around 3:30 a.m. when a dispute initially broke out between a group of women in the park.
The verbal altercation quickly escalated, drawing in male associates who introduced firearms into the conflict, transforming a street fight into a deadly shootout.
As gunfire erupted, the situation descended into panic. Responding officers from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department arrived to find a sprawling crime scene with multiple victims. Lewis was discovered with critical gunshot wounds and was unable to survive his injuries, becoming the sole fatality of the night's violence. In addition to Lewis, five other individuals were struck by bullets during the exchange. These victims included four men ranging in age from 18 to 24 and a 21-year-old woman. They were transported to area hospitals with injuries of varying severity, while investigators worked to cordon off the area and recover evidence, including at least one firearm found at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide continued for several weeks as detectives reviewed surveillance footage and interviewed witnesses to piece together the identity of the shooters. In late July, authorities made a significant breakthrough. On July 27, 2024, police arrested a 23-year-old male in connection with the incident. Following the arrest, the Circuit Attorney’s Office issued charges against the suspect, which included Assault 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action. While the investigation remained active to determine the full extent of culpability for all involved parties, this arrest marked the primary legal action taken in the wake of the shooting that claimed Lewis's life.
