On the evening of March 4, 2010, police in Indianapolis, Indiana, were dispatched to a reported shooting on the city's north side. The incident occurred at an apartment building located at 3640 North Meridian Street. Officers arrived just after 9:45 p.m. to find a 23-year-old Black male named James Edward Cofield III suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
He was discovered lying on the front steps of the building's entrance.
Emergency medical personnel rushed Cofield to Methodist Hospital, where he was immediately taken into surgery. Despite the efforts of medical staff to treat his injuries, he died from the wounds shortly after his arrival. Homicide detectives responded to the scene to begin their investigation, initially focusing on determining whether the shooting had taken place inside the apartment building or outside where the victim was found.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Indianapolis police released a description of a suspect they were seeking in connection with the homicide.
