Cleveland Fuller III, a 36-year-old male, was fatally shot on May 6, 2020, in Kansas City, Missouri. The incident occurred in the early morning hours at a Quick Shop convenience store located at 5401 Winner Road. Police officers were dispatched to the scene around 2:51 a.m. following reports of gunfire. Upon arrival, they discovered Fuller, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.
Surveillance footage from the location reportedly captured a suspect wearing black clothing, red tennis shoes, a blue baseball cap, and a red mask firing at the victim.
The violence continued minutes later at a nearby location. Approximately seven minutes after the initial shooting, officers responded to a second call at the Green Leaf Apartments in the 5300 block of Williamsburg Court. There, they found another victim, 42-year-old Michael L. Groves, who had also been shot to death. Investigators determined that the two shootings were connected, occurring in rapid succession within a short distance of one another.
Authorities arrested a suspect, 43-year-old Matthew D. Harris, in connection with both homicides. Harris was detained near the apartment complex shortly after the second shooting, reportedly wearing clothing that matched the description of the individual seen in the surveillance video. According to charging documents, Harris allegedly made statements to police suggesting the altercation began at the gas station, claiming someone had fired at him first, though police stated that Fuller was unarmed. Harris was subsequently charged with two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of armed criminal action.
