In the summer of 2020, a life was tragically cut short on a street in north St. Louis. On the afternoon of July 25th, Tobyron Shaw, a male, found himself in the midst of a heated argument. He was with a 25-year-old woman who was trying to leave the area after a dispute with a man she knew, Joseph Downing. As Shaw and the woman attempted to depart, the argument escalated, drawing Shaw into the conflict with Downing.
The verbal confrontation quickly turned violent.
Downing produced a firearm and shot Tobyron Shaw multiple times in the head, chest, and torso. As Shaw attempted to flee the horrific scene, Downing then turned his weapon on the woman, shooting her in the face. In a brutal continuation of the assault, Downing tried to fire at her again, but the pistol failed. He then resorted to striking her repeatedly with the weapon. Tobyron Shaw succumbed to his injuries and died at the scene. The female victim survived but was left with a gunshot wound to her mouth that caused permanent scarring.
In the aftermath of the deadly encounter, law enforcement identified Joseph Downing, then 32, as the suspect. He was subsequently arrested and faced serious charges for his alleged actions. The charges brought against him included first-degree murder for the death of Tobyron Shaw, first-degree assault for the attack on the female victim, and two counts of armed criminal action. Court documents revealed that Downing had a prior criminal history, which included convictions for distributing controlled substances and assaulting a law enforcement officer. Following his arrest, a judge denied him bond.
