On the night of August 20, 2011, Indianapolis police responded to a report of violence outside an apartment complex on the city's east side. The incident occurred just before midnight, prompting officers to rush to the scene where they discovered two victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Among the injured was Michael Harney, a 27-year-old Black male, who had been targeted in the shooting along with another individual.
