On the morning of January 19, 2021, a violent incident unfolded in the Hamilton Heights neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, claiming the life of 33-year-old James Johnson. Police officers responded to a call regarding a shooting just before 8:00 a.m. in the 1300 block of Union Boulevard. Upon arrival at the scene, first responders discovered Johnson lying on the porch of a residence, suffering from critical gunshot wounds.
He was immediately transported by EMS to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel pronounced him dead shortly after his arrival.
Investigators quickly secured the scene and identified a suspect inside the same residence where the shooting occurred. The individual taken into custody was identified as Honor Johnson Jr., the 36-year-old brother of the victim. Police recovered a firearm at the scene believed to be the weapon used in the killing. Honor Johnson Jr. was arrested without further incident, and the case was subsequently referred to the Circuit Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
Legal proceedings against Honor Johnson Jr. continued for over two years. Initially charged with first-degree murder, two counts of first-degree assault, and two counts of armed criminal action, the case eventually reached a resolution through a plea agreement. In March 2023, Honor Johnson Jr., then 38, appeared before Circuit Judge David Mason and pleaded guilty to the reduced charge of second-degree murder and one count of armed criminal action.
During the emotional sentencing hearing, Honor Johnson Jr. wept as he offered an apology to his late brother's young daughter for his actions. Under the terms of the plea deal, which was accepted by the Johnson family, the judge sentenced him to ten years in prison for the murder charge and a consecutive three-year term for armed criminal action, resulting in a total sentence of thirteen years in the Missouri Department of Corrections.
