In the winter of 2021, the life of 23-year-old Chandler Vincent Sweaney was tragically cut short in his Springfield, Missouri, home. On the evening of February 1st, two men, Paul Morales and Timothy Johnson, arrived at Sweaney's residence on West Chestnut Street with the intention of conducting a drug deal with his roommate, Ricky Rose. Sweaney, a graduate of Kickapoo High School and a lead chef at Jimm's Steakhouse, had found his roommate through social media and was unfortunately an innocent
bystander to the events that unfolded.
The drug transaction soured, leading to a fatal altercation. It was during this dispute that Paul Morales fired a gun, striking and killing Chandler Sweaney as he sat on his couch. Investigators later confirmed that Sweaney had no involvement in the drug deal that led to his death. His passing left his family and friends devastated, remembering him as a kind, caring, and optimistic individual with a passion for music and self-improvement.
Following an investigation into the shooting, three individuals were arrested and faced charges in connection with Sweaney's murder. Paul Morales, the man identified as the shooter, was charged with second-degree murder. His accomplice, Timothy Johnson, and Sweaney's roommate, Ricky Rose, were also charged with second-degree murder for their roles in the incident.
The legal proceedings brought a measure of justice for Chandler Sweaney's family. Ricky Rose and Timothy Johnson both pleaded guilty to their charges. Rose was sentenced to 10 years in prison, while Johnson received a 15-year sentence. Paul Morales, however, was the only one of the three to go to trial. In November 2023, a jury found him guilty on three counts, including second-degree murder. In January 2024, a judge sentenced Morales to life in prison with the possibility of parole for the murder, in addition to a 25-year sentence for other related charges.
