In the early morning hours of March 28, 2021, a violent incident unfolded in the 1800 block of North Second Street in Saint Joseph, Missouri, resulting in the death of a local resident. Police officers were dispatched to the scene around 4:20 a.m. following a call from a concerned citizen. Upon their arrival at the residence, authorities discovered a male victim suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
The victim was subsequently identified as Jeffrey Lee Grippando, a 38-year-old White male who had lived in the area. Despite the emergency response, he was pronounced dead at the scene, leaving behind a grieving family including his parents, three sons, and a grandson.
Investigators quickly began working to piece together the events that led to the shooting. By the evening of that same Sunday, developments in the case led law enforcement to a specific person of interest. Saint Joseph police took 26-year-old Devin Ray Sollars into custody in connection with the homicide. Reports indicated that the shooting was not a random act, and the swift identification of the suspect allowed for an immediate arrest.
Following the arrest, prosecutors formally charged Sollars with second-degree murder. During the initial legal proceedings, his bond was denied, requiring him to remain in the Buchanan County Jail. The investigation determined that Grippando had died from a single gunshot wound, and the case proceeded through the Buchanan County court system with Sollars identified as the primary suspect responsible for the killing.
