In the early morning hours of June 9, 2021, a violent altercation unfolded on the 1400 block of East Atlantic Street in Springfield, Missouri, claiming the life of Christopher Lee Kuder. The 42-year-old male, a long-time resident of the area known to friends and family as Chris, was involved in an argument in the street that included several individuals. Officers from the Springfield Police Department were dispatched to the scene around 2:00 a.m. following reports of gunfire.
Upon arrival, they discovered Kuder suffering from a critical gunshot wound to the chest. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
Investigation into the shooting revealed that the dispute had escalated rapidly. Witnesses at the scene stated that the confrontation involved multiple people and ended when a suspect fired at Kuder. The victim, who required the use of a cane to walk, was reportedly unarmed at the time of the incident. Law enforcement officers canvassed the area and located a suspect, identified as 22-year-old Mickal Johnson, in the front yard of a nearby residence. A witness positively identified Johnson as the shooter, and he was subsequently taken into custody.
Following the arrest, prosecutors charged Johnson with second-degree murder, armed criminal action, and unlawful possession of a firearm, the latter charge stemming from a prior felony conviction which prohibited him from owning a weapon. During the legal proceedings, Johnson claimed he had acted in self-defense because he felt threatened, despite the absence of a weapon on the victim. The case experienced multiple delays but ultimately concluded with a conviction. Mickal Johnson was sentenced to 22 years in prison for his role in the death of Kuder.
Christopher Kuder was born in Tribune, Kansas, and had spent much of his life between Kansas and Missouri. He was a father and had worked in various professions, including food service and truck driving, after attending culinary school. The tragic event left a significant void in his family, who remembered him as a dedicated father and a warrior who had overcome personal challenges.
