On July 18, 2021, the community of Warsaw, Missouri, was shaken by a violent incident that claimed the life of 28-year-old White male Lance Michael Lyman. The events unfolded during the early morning hours at a gathering near the Osage River, specifically at the end of Clearview Drive, an area known locally as a spot for social events. Witnesses reported that the atmosphere at the river’s edge party, which had continued throughout the night, turned chaotic around 5:00 a.m.
when a disturbance broke out among the attendees.
The situation escalated when a man identified as John M. Moreno began physically assaulting a woman at the scene. In an act of bravery, Lyman stepped in to intervene and protect the woman from the attack. During this confrontation, Moreno allegedly produced a small-caliber handgun and opened fire. In the confusion that followed, Lyman was struck by gunfire. Despite his injuries, he managed to jump into the back of a pickup truck that was fleeing the scene, urging the driver to 'drive, drive.' The gunman continued to shoot at the retreating vehicle, with one bullet grazing the driver's shirt and narrowly missing him.
The truck sped toward the Warsaw Ambulance Base in a desperate attempt to get medical attention for Lyman. Emergency responders were diverted to the base to assist him, but despite their efforts to save his life, he succumbed to his injuries before he could be airlifted to a hospital. The Benton County Sheriff’s Office, recognizing the severity of the crime, immediately launched a homicide investigation with assistance from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.
Law enforcement officers and a SWAT team quickly descended upon a residence in Benton County where the suspect had barricaded himself. The standoff ended without further violence when Moreno surrendered to authorities and was taken into custody. Following his arrest, prosecutors charged Moreno with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and two counts of armed criminal action. He was held in the Benton County Jail without bond and entered a plea of not guilty during his initial court appearances, with legal proceedings continuing into the following year.
