On August 6, 2021, the community of Kansas City, Missouri, was shaken by the violent death of 19-year-old African American Lionell Hamilton III. The incident occurred on a Friday evening when officers from the Kansas City Police Department were dispatched to the 12100 block of East 43rd Street, just east of Blue Ridge Boulevard. Authorities responded to reports of gunfire shortly after 9:15 p.m.
Upon their arrival at the scene, they discovered Hamilton outside of a local business suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.
First responders and police officers immediately attempted life-saving measures before emergency medical services transported the young man to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Hamilton succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the facility. He was known in his community as a drill captain for the Marching Cobras, a local performance group, where he was remembered for his dedication and leadership.
In the aftermath of the shooting, detectives and crime scene personnel processed the area for evidence and canvassed for potential witnesses. Police believed that several individuals were present in the area at the time of the shooting but had left before law enforcement arrived. To encourage leads, authorities offered a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to an arrest. As of the available public records, no suspects have been formally charged or arrested in connection with his murder, leaving the case as an ongoing investigation for the department.
