On the afternoon of October 7, 2021, a transaction over a cell phone turned violent in Springfield, Missouri, resulting in the death of 17-year-old male I’Shon Dunham. Authorities were dispatched to a residence on East Norton Road around 4:41 p.m. after receiving reports of a shooting. Upon arrival, first responders discovered two teenagers suffering from gunshot wounds.
While one of the wounded individuals was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Dunham succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation revealed that the incident stemmed from an arranged meeting to sell an iPhone. According to reports, Dunham had communicated with an acquaintance, Raquan White, to purchase the device. White arrived at the location accompanied by 30-year-old Antonio J. Meanus. Witness statements indicated that during the exchange, Dunham allegedly produced a firearm and attempted to rob White while he was inside the vehicle. In response to the threatened robbery, Meanus drew his own weapon and fired at Dunham. As the vehicle attempted to flee the scene, a 16-year-old associate of Dunham reportedly returned fire at the departing car.
Following the shooting, police detained two suspects in connection with the homicide. Antonio Meanus, identified as a Black male from Springfield, was arrested and subsequently charged with second-degree murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. Meanus later told investigators he believed he and the driver were in imminent danger when he discharged his weapon. The 16-year-old juvenile who had accompanied Dunham was also arrested and charged with second-degree murder, as Missouri law allows for murder charges against individuals participating in a felony that results in a death.
