In the late morning of a Sunday in June 2019, 58-year-old Vladimir Sukhoparov was reported missing from the vicinity of the Kauai Beach Resort in Lihue, Hawaii. Earlier, he had been seen going for a run, dressed in black swim trunks. Concern grew when some of his personal belongings were discovered on the beach, leading to the suspicion that he may have gone for a swim in the ocean and encountered trouble.
The alarm was raised when the security office of the resort contacted Kauai Emergency services at 11:23 a.m. to report him missing. This initiated a coordinated and extensive search and rescue operation in the waters off Kauai.
