Arnold
Kayutak
57
Male
In the remote coastal village of Wainwright, Alaska, nestled on the shores of the Chukchi Sea, a 57-year-old man named Arnold Nigaaluk Kayutak was a familiar presence. The date of June 12, 1989, however, marks the last time he was verifiably seen. On that day, Arnold, an American Indian/Alaska Native male, disappeared from his residence under circumstances that remain unclear. He was a man of the outdoors, familiar with the harsh and beautiful landscape that surrounded his home in the North Slope Borough. At the time he went missing, he was described as being 6 feet tall and weighing approximately 200 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. The details surrounding Arnold's disappearance point to an abrupt and unplanned departure. He was last known to be at his home, but when he could not be located, it was discovered that his new .243 rifle was also gone from the residence. This detail suggests he may have gone hunting, a common activity in the region. He was reportedly wearing a dark blue hunting parka with a light blue lining and a wolverine ruff, along with black pants and brown rubber knee boots. It is also believed he may have been carrying a hunting knife. Distinctive physical features noted by those who knew him included a missing left finger and a scar on his right knee. The passage of time has not brought clear answers in Arnold Kayutak's case. The Alaska State Troopers opened an investigation on October 3, 1989, nearly four months after he was last seen, but the trail had grown cold. The vast and unforgiving Alaskan wilderness holds many secrets, and the lack of concrete evidence has made the search for Arnold incredibly difficult. His disappearance left a void in the community of Wainwright, a place where ties run deep. The case remains an open wound for those who knew him, a story without an ending. The official investigation continues to be handled by the Alaska State Troopers, with the hope that one day, information will surface to explain what happened to Arnold Kayutak.
