In the rugged and often unforgiving waters of Alaska, the life of a commercial fisherman is one of constant challenge, a dance with the raw power of nature. For 34-year-old Steven Nazarian, this life was a reality. In September of 1991, he was working as a crewman aboard the Nagan, a 40-foot halibut longline fishing vessel based out of Cordova. Alongside another crewman, Steven ventured into the vast expanse of the Alaskan sea, a place that provides a livelihood for many but also demands the utmost respect and caution. The exact date of their last contact remains uncertain, a detail lost to the tumultuous events that would soon unfold. The calm of their fishing expedition was shattered when the Nagan encountered peril on the water. On September 23, 1991, the vessel was discovered capsized near Egg Island, on the expansive and often treacherous Copper River Flats, south of Cordova. The sight of the overturned vessel was a grim testament to the sea's formidable power. An immediate search and rescue operation was launched in the hopes of finding the two crewmen alive. Tragically, the body of Steven's fellow crewman was recovered from the frigid waters, a heartbreaking loss for his family and the close-knit fishing community. Despite the sorrow of one crewman's passing, hope remained for Steven's safe return. Search efforts were undertaken by the Alaska State Troopers and likely involved the U.S. Coast Guard, who frequently patrol the dangerous Alaskan coastline. The searchers scoured the area around the inverted vessel, battling against the elements and the vastness of the sea. However, as hours turned into days, the hope of finding Steven alive began to fade. The extensive searches of the area were ultimately unsuccessful in locating him. The unforgiving waters held their secrets, leaving behind a painful void for Steven's family and friends. The case of Steven Nazarian is a somber reminder of the inherent dangers faced by those who make their living on the sea, a story of a life lost to the unpredictable and powerful forces of nature that shape the Alaskan coast.
