However, she never arrived at her daughter’s home, and no one has heard from her since.
Ten days later, Sandra's burgundy 1984 Subaru station wagon was found abandoned in an alley in Santa Maria, California. Her luggage was still inside the vehicle, but her purse and keys were missing. At the time of her disappearance, Sandra had been carrying a substantial amount of cash, which she had received from her ex-husband to pay bills and to settle debts with her ex-boyfriend. Sandra had recently ended an abusive relationship with this ex-boyfriend, which raised suspicions, though no charges were ever filed.
Further complicating the case, an anonymous note directed authorities to search an area near Orcutt, California, where Sandra’s body was supposedly hidden, but no evidence was found.
