On a summer day in Hawaii, 57-year-old Roy Takatsuki, an experienced fisherman, set out from Haleiwa Harbor on Oahu to participate in the North Shore Hanapa'a Jackpot Fishing Tournament. He checked in with tournament officials early on the morning of June 25, 2004, indicating his plan to fish near a buoy several miles off Barbers Point. At some point during the day, he contacted a friend to report that his outrigger had broken. As the day wore on and other fishermen returned to the harbor, concern grew for Takatsuki when he failed to check back in by the 6 p.m. deadline. This was out of character for the seasoned angler, who was a past president of the Contractors' Association of Kauai and a regular participant in the annual fishing competition.
The realization that Takatsuki was missing launched an extensive search and rescue operation. The Coast Guard, utilizing a C-130 Hercules airplane and a Dolphin helicopter, combed the waters for any sign of the missing fisherman. They were joined by the Honolulu Fire Department and around 20 of Takatsuki's fellow tournament participants and friends, who took to their own boats to scour over 140 miles of ocean, some venturing as far as Kauai. The search took a somber turn when Takatsuki's 18-foot Boston Whaler, named the 'Beverley,' was discovered by two recreational fishermen off Kauai's North Shore. The boat was found idling with no one on board. On the vessel, they found Takatsuki's cell phone and used it to contact the last number he had called, reaching his friend, Glen Kaneshiro, with the devastating news.
The discovery of the empty boat led to the theory that Takatsuki may have fallen overboard, possibly while fighting a fish. Despite the intensive search efforts by air and sea, Roy Takatsuki was never found. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a 57-year-old Asian male, standing 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 215 pounds, with white hair. The fishing community was deeply affected by his disappearance, holding a prayer for him at what was meant to be a celebratory banquet for the tournament. The case remains a painful memory for his loved ones and the tight-knit fishing community of Hawaii, a sudden and tragic event that underscores the unpredictable nature of the sea. The disappearance of Roy Takatsuki serves as a solemn reminder of the dangers faced by those who make their living or find their passion on the open water.
