The vessel was found hard aground on the rocks near Cape Fanshaw, approximately 30 miles northwest of Petersburg, its engine still running. This eerie scene immediately suggested that something had gone terribly wrong. A rescue swimmer was dispatched to inspect the boat and found it completely empty. The halibut catch from the trip was still aboard, but it had spoiled, indicating some time had passed since the vessel was abandoned.
