In the late summer of 2000, a young man named Erik Jonathan Kveum, aged 21, was in Juneau, Alaska. On September 6th, he and 40-year-old Charles Johnson embarked on a journey in a 20-foot aluminum setnet skiff. Their intended destination and the full purpose of their trip remain unclear, but it was this voyage that would lead to their disappearance. The last known contact with either man was on that day, and what transpired in the waters near Yakutat has been pieced together from the remnants of their final trip. Erik, a white male with blond or strawberry-colored hair and brown eyes, was reportedly wearing blue jeans at the time. The circumstances under which Erik and Charles vanished point to a tragic accident at sea. Their skiff was later discovered capsized near Ocean Cape, located on the southwest shore of Yakutat. At the time the two men were traveling, there were small craft warnings in effect for the area, indicating that weather conditions were hazardous for smaller vessels. It is presumed that the rough seas and perilous weather overcame their boat, causing it to overturn and throwing both men into the unforgiving Alaskan waters. Following the discovery of the overturned skiff, an official search was launched to find the missing men. The Alaska State Troopers were involved in the effort to locate any sign of Erik or Charles. Despite their searching of the area, they were unable to find either of them. The official report on their disappearance states that they are presumed to be deceased. The case serves as a somber reminder of the power of the sea and the inherent risks of maritime travel in the often-unpredictable Alaskan wilderness, leaving their families with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss.
