On a late summer evening in Alaska, 68-year-old Daniel Hass, a visitor from Algoma, Wisconsin, found himself in a perilous situation on the Kenai River. It was August 27, 2018, when the boat he was in, occupied by two other men from his hometown, overturned near the Moose Meadows area. The unfortunate incident occurred when the vessel reportedly struck a rock while drifting sideways down the river. While his two companions, 68-year-old Charles Bohman and 64-year-old Lawrence Paul, were rescued by a Good Samaritan after clinging to the hull of the capsized boat, Hass was last seen floating down the river. At the time of the accident, none of the three men were wearing personal flotation devices. Following the incident, which was reported to the Alaska State Troopers at approximately 7 p.m., an immediate search was launched. Central Emergency Services and Wildlife Troopers scoured the area for any sign of Daniel Hass until darkness fell, but their efforts were unsuccessful. The search continued the following day, but tragically, it proved to be futile, and Hass remained missing. Authorities stated that alcohol was not believed to have been a contributing factor in the boating accident. The two rescued men were transported to Central Peninsula Hospital for medical attention. Daniel Hass was a man deeply connected to the outdoors and his community in Wisconsin. He was remembered as a loving father, husband, brother, and grandfather. His passion for nature was evident in his roles as a Wisconsin Hunter and Bowhunter Safety Instructor and his memberships in organizations like the National Rifle Association and the Quality Deer Management Association. He was an avid conservationist who instilled in his children a love for hunting, fishing, and respecting the land. The case of Daniel Hass's disappearance is a somber reminder of the unforgiving nature of the Alaskan wilderness. What began as a fishing trip among friends ended in a tragic accident that led to an extensive but ultimately unsuccessful search. Regrettably, Daniel Hass was located deceased, bringing a sorrowful conclusion to the search for the missing Wisconsin angler.
