In the winter of 2019, the life of 21-year-old Diego Daniel Quintero-Fregozo took a dark and mysterious turn. He was last seen on December 16th in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, at a residence on East Sprague Street. That day, the home was targeted in a violent home invasion and robbery. During the chaos, unknown assailants forcibly removed Diego from the house, and he was presumably taken away from the area.
Disturbingly, the other occupants of the residence did not report his abduction to the police until two full days after the incident occurred, a delay that has added a layer of complexity and concern to the investigation. Since that traumatic day, Diego has not been seen or heard from again.
The circumstances surrounding the home invasion point to a targeted and brutal attack. According to investigators, three masked individuals forced their way into the house in the afternoon. Police suspect the residence was being used for illegal drug activities, including the storage of narcotics and large amounts of cash. The intruders tied up a couple, another adult, and a teenager, subjecting them to repeated assaults with various weapons, including a gun, a knife, and a taser. The victims were left with severe injuries. It wasn't until nearly three hours later that the teenage victim managed to break free and get help to call 911. The assailants were described as men dressed in black, all approximately six feet tall. They were believed to be driving a black 2015-2018 Dodge Charger with tinted windows and a Chevrolet Suburban with custom chrome wheels.
The investigation into Diego's disappearance has been extensive, involving multiple law enforcement agencies. The Winston-Salem Police Department quickly sought assistance from the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security. As the investigation progressed, authorities also reached out to the Mexican Consulate for help in locating any of Diego's family members. The delayed reporting of the kidnapping created significant challenges for law enforcement from the outset. Investigators believe the home was specifically targeted because of its connection to drug trafficking, which may also explain the reluctance of the other victims to immediately contact the police.
