Chenell Renee Gilbert, a 42-year-old mother and grandmother from Indianapolis, Indiana, was last seen on the morning of June 9, 2020. She had plans to be at her daughter's home later that afternoon but never arrived and has not been heard from since. Her last known location was at the residence of an ex-boyfriend on Mars Drive in Indianapolis around 6:30 a.m.
Concerned when she didn't show up, her daughter used a phone location app which pinged her mother's phone at the ex-boyfriend's house before the signal was lost. Chenell's vehicle was also found parked at this location.
Upon her daughter's arrival at the ex-boyfriend's residence, he reportedly stated that Chenell had been there earlier but had left without coming inside. He denied her daughter's request to search the home, and later also initially refused entry to law enforcement. It was several days before investigators were able to obtain a search warrant for the property. The search of the home did not yield any signs of Chenell. Family members have stated that the ex-boyfriend had been abusive towards Chenell. At one point, investigators stated he was no longer a person of interest in her disappearance, a development that concerned her family.
Sometime after she was reported missing, an item belonging to Chenell was discovered near West Morris and South Sigsbee Streets, approximately a mile south of where her car was located. Authorities have not publicly specified what the item was. By October 2020, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department announced that Chenell's missing person case was being investigated as a possible homicide.
