A family outing on a warm June day in 2020 turned into a nightmare that continues to haunt a family and community. On June 11, eight-year-old Tarie Price was enjoying the day at Schramm Park State Recreation Area in Gretna, Nebraska, with her mother and other children. Known to her loved ones as "Juicy," Tarie was playing on a sandbar in the Platte River when the river's powerful current suddenly swept her away.
In the moments that followed, Tarie became separated from her mother and the others. She was last seen approximately a mile downstream, wearing a pink bathing suit.
Immediately following her disappearance, an extensive search and rescue operation was launched. Multiple agencies, including the Sarpy County Sheriff's Office, participated in the efforts. The search involved a dive team, two helicopters, cadaver dogs, and numerous volunteers who scoured the river in airboats and kayaks and on foot. Despite these exhaustive efforts, crews were unable to locate the young girl. The day after she went missing, officials announced that it was unlikely Tarie had survived, considering the conditions and the passage of time. The initial search and rescue mission soon transitioned into a recovery effort, yet Tarie remained missing.
In the years since she was last seen, the search for Tarie Price has never officially ended. Her family, holding onto hope, has organized and participated in numerous volunteer searches along the Platte River, sometimes with the help of nonprofit search and rescue organizations. The Sarpy County Sheriff's Office and the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission have also conducted dozens of their own searches. The river's constantly changing landscape, with its shifting sandbars and debris piles, presents a significant challenge to search teams. Tarie's case is classified as a lost/injured missing person, and she is presumed to have drowned.
