On the evening of April 7, 1989, 40-year-old Grant Carl Schmidt left his home in Beaverton, Oregon. His wife later reported that he had departed at approximately 6:30 p.m. with the intention of visiting friends who also lived in Beaverton. However, he never arrived at his friends' residence and was not seen or heard from again. Concern grew when he failed to show up for his job on the following Monday, April 10th, and had made no contact with any family members or friends. The same evening Grant disappeared, his vehicle was found abandoned on a piece of property off Burkhalter Road in the nearby city of Hillsboro, Oregon. A witness at that location reported a strange series of events that evening. Around 7:30 p.m., they saw a black full-sized Chevrolet Blazer, later identified as Grant's, drive up their 500-foot driveway. Before the vehicle could reach the house, it abruptly veered off, cutting across a corner of a neighbor's property. The Blazer then crashed through some brush and came to a stop over a ridge, resting against some vine maples. The person driving the vehicle left the scene before anyone at the residence could identify them. When the abandoned Chevrolet Blazer was examined, it was found to be unlocked, and perplexingly, the keys had been left in the ignition. The circumstances surrounding Grant Schmidt's disappearance and the subsequent discovery of his crashed and abandoned vehicle remain a mystery. The case, under the jurisdiction of the Washington County Sheriff's Office, has left his family and community without answers for decades, creating a painful and unresolved void for all who knew him.
