In July 2017, 36-year-old Amanda Dean, a mother of four, vanished from Collins, Ohio, leaving her family engulfed in a mystery that would span several years. At the time of her disappearance, she was living with her boyfriend, Frederick Reer, and had expressed to her sister her intentions to leave him due to his abusive behavior. The last communication her family received was a text message to her sister indicating her plan to leave Reer. After she went missing, her family's concern grew, and they reported her disappearance to the Huron County Sheriff's Office. The initial investigation took a perplexing turn when, less than 24 hours after being reported missing, the case was closed. Sheriff Todd Corbin informed the family that Amanda was alive and well, residing in a domestic violence shelter, and did not wish to have contact with them. This explanation, however, brought little comfort to her loved ones, who found it entirely out of character for her to cease all communication, especially with her children. Years passed with no word from Amanda, and her family's pleas for a renewed investigation were finally met in 2022 when the case was officially reopened. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) took the lead at the request of the Huron County Sheriff's Office. This led to significant developments, including the execution of a search warrant at a property on Wells Road where Amanda had lived with Reer. In February 2024, Frederick Reer was indicted on multiple charges, including murder, tampering with evidence, and gross abuse of a corpse in connection with Amanda's disappearance and death. Investigators believe that Reer killed Amanda in their residence on the day she was last seen, subsequently cleaning the crime scene and disposing of evidence. In a significant turn of events, in late 2025, Frederick Reer pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, two counts of tampering with evidence, and gross abuse of a corpse. This plea was a full admission of his guilt in Amanda's death. He was subsequently sentenced to 14 years in prison. Despite this legal resolution, Amanda's body has never been found. The case that began as a missing person report, complicated by early assurances of her safety, ultimately unraveled a domestic violence homicide. While the criminal case against Reer has concluded, a civil lawsuit continues, focusing on the initial response by law enforcement to her disappearance. The investigation into Amanda Dean's disappearance highlights the complexities and challenges of cases involving domestic violence and the enduring pain of a family left without a final resting place for their loved one.
