On the night of August 28, 1996, 22-year-old Clarissa "Carrie" Culberson was dropped off at her home in Blanchester, Ohio, around 11:30 p.m. after playing in a volleyball game with friends. A short time later, a neighbor witnessed her leaving the house in her red 1989 Honda CRX. The following morning, on August 29, Carrie's mother, Debra, noticed that neither Carrie nor her car were at their home. This marked the beginning of a desperate search for the young woman, who was a nail technician with a cheerful disposition. Her family and friends began looking for her, and within nine days, the search expanded to include over 300 volunteers who scoured the fields, forests, and abandoned buildings in the area, but found no trace of Carrie or her vehicle. The focus of the investigation quickly turned to Carrie's on-again, off-again boyfriend, Vincent Doan. Their relationship, which lasted from 1994 to 1996, was marked by extreme volatility and abuse. Doan had a history of violence towards Carrie, including incidents where he smashed her car windows while she was inside and physically assaulted her, causing kidney bruises. Just before her disappearance, Carrie had filed a criminal complaint against Doan for allegedly striking her in the head with a space heater, an injury that required five surgical staples to close. They were scheduled to appear in court in early September for this matter. The night she vanished, Doan had shown up at her volleyball game and angrily tried to get her to leave with him, but she refused. Witnesses later reported seeing a heated argument between a man and a woman in the front yard of the Culberson house, with a neighbor overhearing Doan making threats toward Carrie. Another neighbor of Doan's witnessed him hitting Carrie in the head around 12:20 a.m. on August 29th. In March 1997, Vincent Doan was indicted on four counts of kidnapping, with two counts of aggravated murder added three months later. The trial began in July 1997, where the prosecution argued two main theories: that Doan murdered Carrie in an obsessive rage when he realized he could no longer control her, or that he killed her to prevent her from testifying against him in the pending assault case. Key testimony came from Doan's half-brother's ex-wife, who stated Doan arrived at her home around 3:15 a.m. the morning Carrie disappeared, appearing distraught with blood on his clothes. After four days of deliberation, on August 7, 1997, a jury found Doan not guilty of premeditated murder but convicted him of aggravated murder on the grounds that he had killed her after kidnapping her. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Doan's brother was also convicted of obstructing justice and tampering with evidence, receiving an eight-year sentence. Despite the convictions, the case remains a haunting one for the Blanchester community, as Carrie Culberson's body and her red Honda CRX have never been found. This has made it one of Ohio's most infamous "no-body" murder cases. The investigation itself was fraught with issues, leading the Culberson family to file a civil lawsuit against the then-chief of police and the Village of Blanchester for mistakes that they believe hindered the search for Carrie. The family's relentless fight for justice included enduring multiple trials and advocating for changes in legislation regarding the testing of unidentified remains. For decades, they have continued to search for answers and hope to one day give Carrie a proper burial, a somber testament to the enduring pain and lack of closure that surrounds her disappearance.
