In the early, dark hours of March 26, 2010, Darla Kustra, a 56-year-old resident of Lorain, Ohio, began her routine walk to her job at a plastics recycling plant in Elyria Township. She was a person of habit, known for walking everywhere she went. That morning, she was last seen dressed for the cold weather in a blue winter coat, a dark knit stocking cap, and dark gloves. However, she never arrived at her workplace, and concern grew when she failed to show up for her shift. Her disappearance marked the beginning of a perplexing and sorrowful mystery for her family and the community. Three days later, on March 29, 2010, a grim discovery was made on an abandoned railroad trestle that passes over State Route 57 in Elyria Township. A group of teenagers walking in the area found what was later identified as a human right foot and calf. The area was less than a mile from where Darla worked. Authorities were alerted, and an investigation was launched by the Lorain County Sheriff's Office. After news of the discovery circulated, one of Darla's four daughters came forward and provided a DNA sample, which ultimately confirmed the remains belonged to the missing woman. Despite the positive identification, the rest of her remains were not found, leaving investigators and her loved ones with a host of unanswered questions. The investigation into what happened to Darla Kustra remains open, clouded by a lack of evidence and leads. Searches of the area where her partial remains were found, conducted with search dogs, yielded no further clues. There was no sign of blood or any other evidence at the scene to suggest what had transpired. Investigators have considered several possibilities, including a hit-and-run accident. One theory suggests that due to the darkness and poor weather conditions that morning, which included rain and fog, she may have been struck by a large vehicle, possibly a truck, whose driver may not have even realized what happened. Her family speculates that her body could have become caught on the vehicle and transported miles away. The case is complicated by the fact that Darla was described by her ex-husband as reclusive and estranged from her family. The discovery of only a portion of her remains has left the case in a state of uncertainty, preventing a final determination of whether her death was the result of an accident or foul play.
