On November 26, 2021, a resident who was out looking for their dog discovered skeletal remains near a small creek off Hawkinsville Highway, within the city limits of Eastman. The location was not far from where he had last been reported, but the condition of the remains made immediate identification impossible. For over three years, the family remained in a state of uncertainty. Finally, in January 2025, the Dodge County Sheriff's Office received confirmation from the crime lab: the remains found on Hawkinsville Highway belonged to John Snellgrove. The identification, coming nearly 1,200 days after he vanished, officially closed his missing person case.
